Pyli: a glimpse of a rich past and vibrant present

Pyli, located in the heart of Kos Island, Greece, is a village that seamlessly blends historical significance with traditional Greek charm. Situated approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Kos Town, Pyli offers visitors a glimpse into the island’s rich past and vibrant present.

Historical Significance

Pyli’s history dates back to ancient times, with archaeological findings indicating continuous habitation. Notably, the nearby hill of Psoriari houses remnants of a sanctuary dedicated to the goddesses Demeter and Persephone, highlighting the area’s ancient religious importance.

A short distance from the modern village lies the abandoned settlement of Palio Pyli (Old Pyli), often referred to as the “Mystras of the Dodecanese” due to its impressive medieval fortress. Constructed in the 11th century, the fortress served as a strategic stronghold during Byzantine and later Ottoman periods. Visitors can explore the ruins of the castle, ancient churches, and traditional houses, all set against the backdrop of the island’s rugged landscape.

Cultural Attractions

In the heart of Pyli, the Traditional House of Pyli (Pyliotiko Spiti) offers a window into the daily life of early 20th-century villagers. This meticulously preserved home showcases authentic furnishings, household items, and agricultural tools, providing insights into the island’s cultural heritage.

Another notable site is the Tomb of Charmylos, a Hellenistic-era monument believed to be the final resting place of a local nobleman. The tomb’s architectural features, including its vaulted chamber and stone construction, reflect the funerary practices of the period.

Natural Beauty and Local Life

Pyli is renowned for its natural springs, particularly the Ottoman-era fountain in the village square, which continues to provide fresh water to residents and visitors alike. The surrounding landscape, characterized by olive groves and fertile plains, supports the village’s agricultural activities, with tomatoes being a prominent local product.

The village’s central square serves as a hub of social activity, lined with traditional cafes and tavernas where locals gather to share stories and enjoy regional cuisine. This vibrant community spirit offers visitors an authentic experience of Greek village life.

Pyli stands as a testament to Kos Island’s rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty, inviting travelers to explore its ancient ruins, engage with its traditions, and immerse themselves in its serene landscapes.

For #07, I’d use Therma Beach rather than a generic beach-language lesson. It gives us exactly the kind of surprising Kos-specific discovery the series needs.

The official Kos tourism site says the thermal spring emerges at roughly 42–50°C and mixes with the Aegean inside a natural stone pool. Therma lies about 13 km from Kos Town, beyond Agios Fokas.

🔐 UNLOCK KOS #07 🌊🔥

You arrive at the beach on Kos…

You step into the sea…

…and the water is HOT. 😳

Welcome to:

🇬🇷 Θερμά — Thermá

One of the most unusual places to swim on Kos.

Hidden beneath the cliffs on the southeastern coast, naturally hot spring water flows directly toward the Aegean.

🔥 At the source, the thermal water reaches approximately 42–50°C.

🌊 It then mixes with the cooler seawater inside a natural pool surrounded by rocks—so move around and you`ll actually feel the temperature changing.

And those little bubbles you can feel beneath the water?

They`re linked to volcanic gases rising through the seabed.

There`s even a Greek lesson hidden in its name:

🇬🇷 θερμός — thermós = hot

That`s where Thermá gets its name. 🔥

📍 Therma Beach / Embros Thermae
🚗 About 13 km from Kos Town
🥾 Expect a walk down to the beach
🌙 CarpeDiem tip: the official Kos guide particularly recommends experiencing the thermal springs in the evening under the stars.

Would you swim in naturally hot seawater on a Greek summer day? 😎

👇 HOT 🔥 or NOT ❌?

From Kardamena Port, the adventure doesn’t end at the shoreline. This is your gateway to discovering more of the Dodecanese. 🌊☀️

Step aboard a sailing boat and head across the blue Aegean towards two very different island experiences:

🌋 Nisyros — famous for its impressive volcano, traditional villages and dramatic landscapes.

💙 Tilos — peaceful, authentic and wonderfully unspoiled, with secluded bays, clear waters and a slower island rhythm.

Whether you’re heading out for an excursion or simply enjoying the sailing experience, leaving Kardamena by boat gives you a completely different perspective on the Dodecanese.

It`s 32°C. You`re sitting by the sea on Kos.
You need coffee.
But which one? 👀

🧊 FREDDO ESPRESSO

Espresso shaken with ice until cold, usually topped with a light layer of foam.

Strong. Cold. Simple.

OR…

🥤 FRAPPÉ

Instant coffee, water and ice shaken into that unmistakable thick foam.

A Greek summer classic. 🇬🇷

And there`s a third favourite you`ll see everywhere:

☕ FREDDO CAPPUCCINO

Cold espresso topped with cold, creamy milk foam.

Now let`s actually order one in Greek:

🇬🇷 Ένα φρέντο εσπρέσο, παρακαλώ.

Éna fréddo espréso, parakaló.

👉 “One freddo espresso, please.”

That`s a sentence you can genuinely use five minutes after arriving on Kos. 😎

And remember Episode #01?

The waiter asks:

“Medium sugar?”

You reply:

Εντάξει! — Endáxi! 😉

What happens when Kos combines CHEESE + WINE?

You get one of the island`s most distinctive flavours:

🇬🇷 Κρασοτύρι Κω — Krasotýri Ko

Also known locally as Týri tis Pósias — the cheese of posia.

But here`s the interesting part…

The cheese isn`t simply dipped into a glass of wine. 🍷

Traditionally, this white sheep`s or goat`s milk cheese is left to mature for at least a month in wine lees — known locally as posia.

That`s what gives the outside its characteristic reddish colour and the cheese its distinctive aroma and flavour.

And this isn`t just another Greek cheese.

🇪🇺 Since 2018, Krasotýri Ko has PGI status, officially linking it to Kos and its local tradition.

📍 When you`re on Kos, look for it in local shops, wineries and traditional tavernas.

💡 CarpeDiem tip: Try it with local wine — or do it the Greek summer way and pair it with watermelon, melon or grapes. 🍉🍇

So now you know:

When Kos gives you wine…

make cheese. 😉

Why did people come to Kos seeking healing more than 2,000 years ago?

The answer is hidden in the hills above Kos Town…

🇬🇷 The Asklepieion of Kos — Ασκληπιείο

This wasn`t simply a temple.

It was a sanctuary dedicated to Asklepios, the ancient Greek god of healing, and became an important centre for healing and the teaching of medicine.

And the location is spectacular. 💙

Built into a green hillside, the complex rises across three terraces, overlooking Kos and the Aegean.

Imagine arriving here in antiquity:

🌿 surrounded by nature
🏛️ temples dedicated to healing gods
🩺 physicians and medical knowledge
🙏 religion and healing intertwined

Excavations have even uncovered ancient surgical instruments, statues and inscriptions at the site.

Standing here today, you`re walking through one of the places that helped make Kos famous for medicine throughout the ancient world.

📍 Asklepieion of Kos
Around 3.4 km southwest of Kos Town.

And now we`re leaving ancient medicine behind…

🧀 Because there`s something on Kos that combines two things Greeks love: cheese and wine.

What happens when you put them together? 😉

There’s something magical about watching the sun slowly disappear behind Kalymnos. 🇬🇷✨

From the northern coast of Kos, the island rises across the Aegean while the sky changes from gold to orange, pink and deep blue. The sea becomes almost perfectly calm, the heat of the day fades, and for a few minutes everything seems to slow down.

No filter needed. No rush. Just the Aegean, Kalymnos on the horizon and another unforgettable Greek sunset. 💙
