Thailand’s tropical climate is warm year-round, but each region experiences the seasons differently. Understanding how rain and heat shift across the country helps you choose the best destination for each time of year.
Cool & Dry Season (Late November – February)
This is considered the best overall time to visit Thailand.
Temperatures are comfortable, humidity is lower, and skies are clear throughout most of the country.
Best for:
- Bangkok
- Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai
- Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi
- Koh Chang & Koh Kood
- Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya
Koh Chang in this season:
This is the ideal period for Koh Chang. Seas are calm, ferries run smoothly, and beaches are at their best. Resorts fill up quickly around Christmas and New Year.
Festivals:
- Loy Krathong (November) – floating lantern festival across the country
- New Year – fireworks in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and major islands
- Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb) – especially vibrant in Bangkok’s Chinatown
Hot Season (March – May)
Temperatures rise sharply, especially in Bangkok and inland areas. Expect stronger sun, midday heat, and higher humidity.
Great for:
- Northern highlands (cooler at elevation)
- Chiang Mai & Pai (morning and evening exploring)
- Gulf islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
- Early-season diving in Koh Tao (excellent visibility)
Koh Chang in this season:
Still good in March and early April, but becomes more humid as the rainy season approaches. Late May often sees rougher seas.
Event:
- Songkran (April 13–15) – Thai New Year water celebrations nationwide. It’s joyful, lively, and very wet — one of Thailand’s most famous cultural events.
Rainy / Monsoon Season (June – October)
Rainfall varies by coast. Showers are usually short but heavy, followed by sunshine. Nature becomes lush and vibrant, and travel is quieter and more affordable.

Northern & Central Thailand
Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai remain very visitable.
Expect afternoon or evening showers — markets, temples, and cafés operate normally.
Andaman Sea (Phuket / Krabi / Phi Phi)
Heavier monsoon with rough seas. Many boat tours pause during peak storms (July–September).
Not ideal for island-hopping.
Gulf of Thailand (Samui / Phangan / Tao)
This area enjoys its best weather from June to September, making it the perfect alternative to Phuket during monsoon.
Koh Chang & Koh Kood
Koh Chang is on the Eastern Gulf coast, and this region receives significant rainfall from June to September.
- Seas can be rough
- Some hotels close
- Ferries may reduce frequency. Travel is possible, but not recommended unless you prefer a very quiet environment and don’t mind rain.
